Notes
The Persona series, which spun off of the Shin Megami Tensei series, is an adventure game series with a focus on summoning “personas” in combat, where characters unleash sides of their personalities with supernatural abilities.
The series is somewhat tied together, especially Persona 3, Personal 3: FES, and Persona 4.
Persona 4: Persona 4 was similar to Persona 3 with the idea of a person who can manifest multiple personas with a band of friends, but had more fleshed out characters and added the ability for the player to form deep relationships with the other main characters, up to and including romance.
The game had horror elements, but drew more from urban legends, as the characters explored a mysterious “midnight channel” that seemed to predict the deaths of people and show people’s fears. There was a strong emphasis on characters unleashing their Personas via psychological exploration that added additional depth.
The game was noted by reviewers and fans for a relatively sensitive handling homosexuality and identity. In addition it had an “extra” ending one could unlock.
Personal 4 had an anime adaption that included many of the social elements from the game as plot elements.
